Charcoal Beanie Crochet Pattern

charcoal beanie crochet pattern

This Charcoal yarn is so great! I love the way it's mostly black, but has little wisps of light gray winding through it. I start to get bored with solid-colored yarn after awhile, and this is much more interesting to work with.

Although, it has some tiny imperfections. If you look at the very right hand edge of the beanie toward the middle of the hat, you will see a little gray spot where the yarn had too much gray compared to the rest. I tend to be a perfectionist with my crochet, so it bugs me just a little! ;) But I still like the yarn.

Ruby Tuesday Beanie Crochet Pattern

Do you ever get bored of your yarn? Using the same, solid-colored yarn to do stitch after stitch can be a big yawn after awhile.

That’s why I love to use self-striping yarn! Every stitch is a slightly different color so you never know what’s coming next. And then you get to make a pom pom! Woot woot! (That's my favorite part, can you tell?)

If you’ve never tried it, download today's free pattern and give it a shot.

Black Chunky Pom Pom Beanie

This weekend I went snowboarding in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. It was closing weekend so there were big parties with live music and fun.

While I was at a free blue grass concert, I noticed a lot of people wearing beanies with pom poms. And they looked so cute, that I had to create my own!

This beanie is warm, soft and loose-fitting. The pom pom sits high on the head so that it sticks up in the air. This way, all of your friends can find you while you're at a free blue grass concert! :)

The pattern is sized for to fit adult women and is written in standard American crochet terms.

Crochet Problem Solving = Q-Tip Holder

I'll be honest. I use a lot of Q-Tips. Almost every day, I accidentally smear my makeup around on my face and I need to fix it with a Q-Tip. The annoying thing is that my bathroom vanity is tiny. So, every day, I have to reach in the little cabinet underneath and feel around for the gigantic box of Q-Tips because it won't fit on the counter or anywhere more convenient.

But not anymore!

I played around and designed a teensy little crocheted Q-Tip holder! This little baby whips up in about 20 minutes and holds my Q-Tips conveniently within reach.

I used a small hook, F/5-3.75mm, so that the stitches would be really tight to give it some structure so it would stand up straight and not flop around.

I did not crochet this in continuous spirals. I tried that, but the top of it always looked a little wonky and not flat. So, instead, I used joined rounds, which you will see in the pattern below.

See! Even my cat, Penny wants a piece of this action! Haha!

She's soooo helpful when I'm doing my crochet photo shoots. She's sure everything is a toy just for her. What a princess.

How to Crochet a Beanie: Measure Your Gauge

Hi Happy Hookers!

Today I'm going to show you a suuuuuuuuper important step in crocheting a beanie: measuring your gauge. In my patterns I have listed the yarn and hook size that I use to make these beanies, but you might hold the yarn tighter or looser than I do. In which case, you would need to use a different size of crochet hook than the one I've listed in the pattern.

This video shows you how to measure your gauge swatch so that you can be sure that your beanie will be the right size every time! And you'll learn what to do if your swatch doesn't match up with the gauge in the pattern.

In case you missed them, click the links below for the previous videos and steps to making your beanie:

FO Friday: Striped Baby Stocking Hat

Finished Object Friday

A few days ago all I had was this scribbled plan in my design binder. After one false start, a bit of frogging and lots of hemming and hawing and staring at the inspiration picture, I finally finished my baby beanie!

Click through the slide show below to see the process of my beanie creation. :)

My pre-crochet plan

My pre-crochet plan

I really hope this ends up fitting like it's supposed to! I'm not completely sure it's the right size for a newborn. But, I'm going to give it to my photographer friend and she can let me know if it needs to be bigger or smaller. Sometimes I get it right the first time, but not always!

It's so much fun to create a new design and then crochet it and bring it to life. :) Creative satisfaction!

What about you? What have you finished crocheting lately? Post links to pics so I can see! :)

WIP Wednesday: Striped Baby Stocking Hat

A photographer friend of mine asked me to design a hat for her to use as a prop in her photo shoots. She sent me this picture and said that she wanted something similar.

Looking at the picture, I'm pretty sure that this cap was made with double crochets, so I'm going to create my own version with single crochets.

I realized that I needed to add the pom pom to the end before the tube got too long. Otherwise, it would have been a big struggle to tie the pom pom on.

TIP: I used a Clover pom pom maker to create this perfect pom pom. I highly recommend them!

When I went yarn shopping for this project, I realized that there is no baby yarn in these neutral colors. Almost all yarn that is super soft and specifically made for babies is pastel pink, blue, green or yellow. There was some white, but no cream or gray. So, I decided to just use my favorite worsted weight yarn.

I started out the top of the hat with a small point and then created a striped tube.

After attaching the pom pom, I kept crocheting the stripes and started increasing rounds in order to grow the bottom of the hat to fit a baby's head.

Since I don't have a live human baby of my own to try this on, I won't be completely sure that it's the right size until I finish it and give it to my photographer friend. I'm hoping I get it right the first time! But, if not, I took good notes on what I did with this design, so I can start again if I'm way off!

What about you? What's on your hook right now? Tell me about it, post links to pics, brag, and share in the comments below! :)
